Celebrate Summer....erm I mean Winter
MP3: Husker Du - Celebrated Summer
VIDEO: Husker Du - Celebrated Summer (Live in London) at YouTube
Unfortunately, winter is a few days away and a T-Shirt isn't an option anymore. So I like to crack open summer related songs to fuel my winter-denial and somehow hold hope that summer is coming soon. Celebrated Summer by Husker Du, one of the most influential post-punk/hardcore bands of the 80's, can't be beaten for a quintessential summer track. The raw and abrasive rhythm section with fuzzy and loose lo-fi guitars, rubbery bass line, a fumbly drum beat and Bob Mould's muted vocal yelp bring together a track that sets it apart just enough from other brilliant 80's punk/hardcore acts like Mission of Burma, Minutemen and Bad Religion. The trademark Husker Du sonic wall is punctuated with carefree lyrics about getting drunk on the beach, daylight saving time and playing in a band. Superb and beautiful track from an underrated and important band.
