The Valentinos - Damn and Damn Again EP
What can I say about The Valentinos that hasn't already been said? The Sydney act have become one of the buzz bands of 2006 with immense anticipation preceeding the release of their latest EP, Damn and Damn Again being perpetuated on blogs, in the street presses and on independent radio.
Their sound is very now, but still expertly take elements of the New Wave sound mixed with psycadelica and Krautrock and the end result of their toil is an extremely satisfying and engaging release. The single 'Rain' has been on high radio rotation and is the most immidiate track on the EP, with a chorus that soars and swirls among layers of guitar, synth and drums and is extremely infectious. 'Face On The Wall' is an equally infectious stomp that reveals the bands obvious love for 80's New Wave with distant guitar riffage and an almost 'wall of sound' production. 'Reflauta Y Reflauta' shows the bands darker side with a stunning build up of tension and release with reverb, frenetic drums and wailing vocals trashing any resemblance of a conventional song structure, yet somehow keep it catchy and engaging; whilst 'Nightmoves' struts and rollocks along with a throbbing drum beat and almost spoken baritone vocals complimenting some impresssive falsetto.
This E.P is an exciting statement from a band that deserve to be heard and who have an obvious skill in creating intricate and entralling music that is unique and ultimately accessable. This band are the coolest kids in school right now, and with the versatility to write a pop song like 'Rain', and then 4 tracks later create an top-shelf instrumental piece like 'Nunca Mas', this band will take over the world in no time.
