Brand New Brand New

2003 won't be remembered as a champagne year for music, however in that particular year Brand New released their career defining LP Deja Entendu. Previously just a pop-punk band with a few witty one liners, Jesse Lacey and co. moved from their roots and recorded an intelligent and emotional album full of wry lyrics and soft/loud dynamics. It was dubbed an emo classic by many silly journos, despite the fact it is clearly not an emo album. In spite of this, it was elevated to the status as one of the most cherished musical possessions of my youth.

Much to my pleasure, Brand New are back. After leaking tracks from the album earlier in the year on Lacey's personal blog, the band hit the studio for real, kept only two of those tracks and delivered The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me. The album is another step away from the pop/punk of Your Favourite Weapon and continues the progress made on Deja Entendu. This time the song titles are truncated, lyrics sharper and more incisive, musically far more textured and intricate and it still maintains much of those soft/loud dynamics that were executed so well on their last album. A duality seems be occuring inside Lacey's lyrics, with the albums title hinting at the good vs evil idea that permeates the record.

I will stop talking about it now, just give it a listen.
