The grip of assignments has been breaking me, I say it every blog but finally I am free (for atleast 3 days). So it's time to give you all a crash course in the vast amounts of fantastic music that's been coming my way. An album review was the most inoffensive and enjoyable way to start off the week at whiteboydancefloor.
Great Northern typify everything that is glorious about indie rock at the moment. Uplifting. Dramatic. Delicate. Radiant. Trading twilight for daylight is a quite aptly named title for their latest release in that they are capable of taking you through the doldrums of darkness with adrenalin filled anticipation and smooth transition into the splendours of daylight without even missing a beat. I could not deny that Trading twilight for daylight does embody some very potent pop sensibilities but the grandiosity of the songwriting, the dare to dream big intention and the faultless execution make for a grand package. Personally, I was blown away by the sheer scope of music tone and dynamic that Great Nothern go for. There is nothing safe about the intent of this production, Great Northern are going for it and if you ask me, they're going to get there.
Trading twilight for daylight will not offend any indie kid out there, but the soaring possibilities that their chorus writing skills achieves means that it's doubtful the Great Northern will remain our little secret for long. If i had to find something that didn't sit well with me, I would have to pick on the vocals. Not that they are bad, to the contrary they are magic and in a few instances on the album, I would have loved to hear the music completely stripped back on an acoustic or slow synth pop type track which allows the vocals to reach for the heavens. For me, only "city of sleep" even comes close. In saying that, I think Great Northern have chosen to go for the whole package rather than a display of segments across the album.

Trading twilight for daylight is out this month on Eenie Meenie Records.
I think this acoustic performance of Babies gives a good indication of what I mean by allowing their vocal talents to take centre stage.
To give you an idea of our intentions here at whiteboydancefloor, we set out to dislike, mock and hate everything and everyone that comes into contact with us. We are the radical skeptics of society that worship the work of Frederich Nietzsche and will settle for nothing less than your adoration and obedience. Of late, I realise we have been getting slightly over positive but we make no apologies. There has been an avalanche of new music which has all been deserving of our words, Great Northern are no different.
