Le Pony's Picks #1

Today marks the first of what I hope is many posts like this. Each week rising Dj & internet traveler Le Pony Boy scours the internet for fresh tunes to send the way of whiteboydancefloor. So rather than me constantly dropping the fine tunes of the great Le Pony Boy and call them my own, I decided to create what may become a series of posts entitled "Le Pony's Picks". As you can imagine, It took hours and hours on end to think up such a creative title.

Foals are an act who are making all the right moves in the UK. In 2007, the boys have already line up themselves support shows with the likes of Bloc Party, Go! Team & even a spot at the Reading Festival alongside even more big names. They have a sound which is very "now" but like a rare crop of acts, they do it better than most. Jangled electroclash which would send people at dance halls into fits of spastic movement and non-stop jubilation. Certainly an exciting prospect which will hopefully make their way down under very soon. If you like music like The Rapture, Foals are definitely for you.

Myspace: Foals

Grand Prix 86'
are a really cosy indie band from Norwich. Despite the everyday strains of living in an area responsible for one of the most average Premier League challenges in recent soccer history, Grand Prix 86' give the good people of Norwich some hope. Using very minimal amounts of sound and simple lush choruses, the relaxing tones of this brand of indie pop are impossible to fight again. Rather allow yourself to be swept away and taken to somewhere better than here. I haven't heard more personally enjoyable use of the good ol' Casio keyboard since Hot Chip.

Myspace: Grand Prix 86'

And finally in this inaugural installment of Le Pony's Picks is a clip from The Damn Arms. Now for anyone who reads whiteboydancefloor, we can only assume you also sample the other finest blogs which come out of Sydney and as such, Damn Arms need no explanation or introduction. Here is a clip for their track "homewreckers".

Nup. He's right. I gave them a chance and listened to all three of their myspace hits but Grand Prix are just awful! They're like a really bad imitation of Coldplay. Or something..

Listen to Interpols new song! I heart it sooo hard!

lol dayve and sam agreeing. i never would have guessed haha

its not the kind of music you can go searching for the hook, you have to let it smother you. again not something either of you really enjoy.

but diversity is what makes wbdf great

perhaps you should giv coldplay another listen, the similarities are very few. coldplay adopt a more heavily laden approach to music as opposed to grand prix 86's minimalist approach.

if its minimalist i fail to see how it can 'smother' you. thats like trying to suffocate someone with a wet tissue.

my main issue with the music (of grand prix 86) apart from the shitty composition (2 of those 3 songs are in c major and one in f major, meaning only one black note throughout all of them - indicative of someone who's never really studied to be a musician but thinks because they've got a keyboard and the internet they can be famous, not to mention we have to hear a middle c 16 times before one of those songs even kicks in as well as tragic and predictable chord changes, little to no dynamic shifts, boring structures, etc etc), there is no hook, so you cant go searching for it. basically i could sit here and deconstruct (as im definite this comment will be) these 'minimalist' pieces as nothing more than, IN MY OPINION, home-style demos that arent really worthy of recognition but that would be forcing my OPINION on people and god knows we dont do that..

our respective comments were not colluded. thats like me saying 'oww pix agreeing with clint - i would never have guessed haha lol'. and letting music 'smother' me is not something i enjoy? since when have you even understood the way i listen to music?

if diversity is what makes wbdf great, then i hope someone else hurries up and gets a post in.

i feel privileged that you enjoy my music Michael.

Grand Prix 86 have a laid back indie disco vibe. There doing well for themselves with the likes of 'David E. Sugar' remixing 'Lights In Your Eyes'
There one of those indie bands that will be remixed from time to time and with great success, take Hot Chip for example and remixing of there own which seems to be the go for all of the more notable indie bands these days could be closer then we think.

Lol wow! When lacking strength in conviction go for a low blow! Nice.

The Indie genre is a key feature in my daily musical intake- i just prefer the stuff that is...you know.....not shit. Im not gonna smother myself in shit! Eww.

It's human nature to avoid that which disgusts us, not bury ourselves amongst it. In doing so I would merely be neutralised to the incessant drone anyway. My only moments of pleasure would be sought during the silence between each track.

I stand by my unique and personal opinion, free of external influence.

Maybe if they were Grand Prix 87 things would be different.

p.s where the feck did that forum go?

nothing lacking in my musical conviction, i could argue it til the cows come home but im not goin to keep tussling something out with my best friends over difference of opinion.

evidently this isnt a genre of indie you are aware of then as some of the biggest names in indie r buzzed about these guys.

but hey not for me to sell it, like we r all free to like and dislike what we want

im just glad i got some comments for a change, good ppl r reading this.

i think grand prix 07 from the circuit de gilles villeneuve on sunday was much better than grand prix 86, how good is lewis hamilton! he is the next schumacher without the ego i think and its nice to see mclaren doing well again.

i can tell you kicked ass in aural in the HSC dave, criticism that utilises actual musical analysis and concepts is all too rare and i wish i was better at it

ill post tomorrow after my exam, but dave ill give you first dibs if you like

the end

ps i dont like either of those bands
