One of my favourite acts of 2006/2007 was a raucous bunch of teenagers called Be Your Own Pet. I bought the self titled debut album; I loved every minute of it as did many of the Whiteboydancefloor crew. It made me want to mess my room up and not clean it up, no matter how much trouble it got me it. That’s right I was willing to be banned from dessert and bike rides for a week, maybe even two!
Well they are back with a follow up and with a title like Get Awkward I couldn’t help but get myself into frenzy, ready to cause more rebel rousing in my household some two years on. I thought to myself, I’m 21 now, I’m practically an adult, I’m going to be so naughty when I listen to this album I might explode into a pillow fight if told to hush.
Now upon hearing some 3 or so tracks from the new album, I was left with a real puzzle. I still don’t know whether or not it is me or their music which has gotten old. Have Be Your Own Pet and Pix out grown each other?
After reading everyone else’s glowing reviews of how destined for further stardom these kids are, I thought it must be me. But then I thought again, as you do. I decided that Be Your Own Pet are the problem. There’s no progression in the mayhem and stagnant mayhem just isn’t mayhem now is it.
By no means am I saying that Be Your Own Pet is bad. I too remember that there are still far worse acts making money and there is definitely quality which I can see in tracks like “Black Hole” but it seems the edges in one of the roughest punk rock outfits have been smoothed out far too much.
Sorry Be Your Own Pet but I’ve felt more inspired to break stuff listening to Operator Please. Just put me down as one of those sophomore album haters.

I agree with you Pix, its too sanitary and I think it sounds a little over-produced. Disappointing
