Size Doesnt Matter

When I think of the words Little Red for some reason I seem to think of tomato sauce, soup and other products launched by Heinz (I think...) under the name Big Red. Now while the sauce was big, tasty and delicious on my proverbial meat pies theres something about a Little Red that goes a long way.

Lately I've been preoccupying myself with getting down to CD shops and catching up with all that I've missed out on as my wallet grows slightly heavier (then again that could be all the 20c coins too) - and havent I heard a few. I wouldnt say that it amazes me that this CD is at the top of my pile and has been for over a week, but I didnt think I would enjoy it as much as I currently am.

If you haven't heard of Melbourne 5- piece Little Red then follow some links down the bottom or even better, go out and buy it. If you HAVE heard of them then you either love them or hate them. Alot of the negatively disposed criticism of these guys comes from what people see as an attempt to re-hash the sounds of the 50s and 60s. What people are failing to hear first and foremost is that these guys sound like they HAVE been making this kind of music since then - and they havent, they're all younger than I am for crying out loud. The music is appropriately produced to keep a vintage sound with a contemporary touch but its the musical construction that gets me. Pretty much everything about these guys is simple but when you put it all together it is just amazing. Lush vocal harmonies that get stuck in reccesses of your brain, lyrics about life, love and Coca Cola. With 16 tracks (sure some of them are short, but what do you care - with your attention span of 1min20sec and all) its value and with lead vocals changing pretty much every song you might even forget what CD you're listening to!

Maybe part of what makes me love these guys so much is that Ive been lucky enough to catch them live. Back to back mics, dancing on drumkits and just incredible amounts of fun personified blows you away with energy before you realise that this is the only way this music should be played. Maybe its my memory of the live performance that makes me enjoy the CD even more, and if that IS the case - GO AND SEE THEM! If you're going to Splendour - first band on Sunday - come and tell me what you thought afterwards! People might write off these guys as a novelty and hell, not even I know how long they'll be around but I'm determined to enjoy it for as long as I can. If Brian Wilsons mind was in tact, he still wouldnt be making music this good. As they say - Listen to Little Red - and put it on your chips too.
