Get Off Your High Horse!

When you run out of money, friends, tolerance of facebook and life in general, Cd's are like the pet that comforts you without asking anything in return or shitting on the carpet. Time poor and without a penny to my name until pay day, I like many turn to my glorious Cd collection for solice.

Now Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers are one of those acts that even the cold-fickle kids of Sydney have held close to their heart for sometime now. All the more reason that a full length release can prove to be both an exciting and anxious listening experience for us Sydney kids. The proverbial "What if it's shit?" always scares me. Sadly when I asked this question of Van She's full length, it answered with a clear concise dump on my heart. But for every band I place my foolishly faith in, there is those that keep the faith or instill something new in me.

I think what warms in me with Mr Pickwicks Camera is that this is just everything we already know about Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers but on a much more sensational scale. I think the better production brings with it the intention to stiffle or water down the joys of Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers but rather to use the production quality as a means to sharpen the sublime king hit this outfit is seeking to deliver.

While the title track "Mr Pickwick's Camera" easily reminds you of everything you have known and loved about them in the past, slowly the array of instruments used expands until we are brought to the brass driven drama that is the track "Wonderland" which is also my clear standout too if you're wondering.

Don't take this as me criticising but much like Architecture in Helsinki, I see Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers as the Seasame Street for adults, not that it is childish but that it is pure enjoyment for enjoyments sake. Demonstrated none better than in "An Issue With People" & the track which I have a video for you below "High Horse".

Again not a criticism, but watch the video below and you try and tell me these guys wouldn't make a kids show you'd watch!

A great theatrical, joyful release that Sydney-siders need more of.

I'd give 3.5 Whiteboys out of 5.
