As January quickly rolls on and December now a distant memory left her wake, I am convinced that the blogosphere is now more than ever before its own living and breathing entity complete with its own cosmic cycles.
Even for the most internet addicted blogger like myself, December and January entails a significant amount of going outside and interacting with REAL people and by REAL people, I don’t just mean those you travel outside the homely realms to challenge in Fifa10, I’m talking about Christmas shopping, Christmas parties, New Years Eve, Summer bbqs, backyard cricket (hopefully involving Fifa afterwards) and all things outdoors!
So something has got to give doesn’t it? That’s right, the Blogosphere.
Every blogger submits their best of sheets or some form of sign off and for at least some part of January, any blog run by REAL people turns into a ghost town. For the bloggers who really want to spoil you, they’ll do a cd’s I got for Christmas post.
Fuck that... you probably got the same shit.
And once Australia Day is done and dusted, we bloggers will only need to encounter these REALies at work or Gigs (unless we can avoid human contact). Come February it’s straight back to emails and text messages and ridiculous amounts of new music... Thank God.
So now that we can confine 2009 and everything about it to last year, I’m taking a leaf out of Hamish & Andy’s book and looking toward what 2010 will be all about. I’m sure the next big thing isn’t known to us yet but I am certain that at least the first part of 2010 for me will be all about 4 releases.
- Vampire Weekend - Contra
- Hot Chip – One Life Stand
- The Strokes – As yet untitled
Vampire Weekend have already started the year in amazing fashion with Contra and from the brief moments of One Life Stand that are available, Hot Chip are set to continue their amazing reflections of pop music but The Strokes for me will be defining one way or another.
With Casablanca establishing himself with critical acclaim as a solo artist, The Strokes must produce something monumental. I wouldn’t consider myself a Strokes fan, more so an admirer of their work however I think their upcoming 2010 release will decide whether they become the cash cow side project to more pressing solo work like Destiny’s Child did to Beyonce or whether they can be defining in the way that Jagger is left naked and weakened without his fellow Rolling Stones.
The challenge is there and it could truly set them up as the all conquering and highly prolific mainstream rock band of the 2000’s.
I fear the challenge maybe be all too much.
Other releases I think may prove noteworthy:
- Beach House - Teen Dream
- Shout Out Louds - Work
- Fleet Foxes - As yet untitled
- Daft Punk - As yet untitled
- Yeasayer - Odd Blood
So what about you? I dare you to be braver than I and make you predictions on what is going to be 2010 outta 10. I’ve had enough of the retrospectives and albums of the decade bullshit for the moment, I wanna get your hot tips on the next big thing!
What’s going to pop? What’s going to flop? Any tips for the FIFA 2010 World Cup?
Come on people, I know you guys are the real tastemakers, let's see if your predictions match your ego.
