The Lies That You Tell

Anyone who has read this blog is well aware of my fondness for the work of British-born Sydneysider, Emma Davis. It seems as if all her songs stick out as markers to map different parts of my life during the last few years. I'm a firm believer that music is all about the response it evokes more than the mere combination of musical instruments and vocals. I think what draws me to Emma Davis' unique vocal is that the songs can sway in tandem with your mood. "All of this" like many of her tracks can be the darkest insight into your inner turmoils or a shining example of the pure goodness that exists your world, the perspective which you pick up on is highly dependent on the mood you enter into listening with.

When I first came across Emma, thanks to the legendary Sandwich Club (RIP) the music was incredibly raw and I was a firm believer that this stripped back acoustic and vocal combo was a large part of the effectiveness Emma Davis had at slicing through to the core of you. I then discovered that after careful consideration and consultation with distinguished producer and artist Brian Campeau, Emma had the same reservations at overdoing it with instrumentation.

However in "All of this" the time taken in finding the right balance with the instrumentation was conducted with the same astute execution that Emma achieves in finding the balance between the light and dark of the key themes in her music. This inclusion of the trumpet is a masterstroke; clearly the ability of the trumpet to suspend the romantic tensions of the song and even more so provide some added bounce and spring to the track is marvelous.

There is a truthfulness and honesty that Emma pours into her music and through her many travels and adventures it is clear that Emma's understanding of people and delivers interesting insights into all simplicities of human interaction that often conjure the biggest mysteries.

The self titled album from Emma Davis will be out middle of this year, even as early as March/April so keep your eyes peeled. Until then "All of this" is the perfect teaser to show you what to expect, head to her myspace to have a listen.
