Album Review: Kid Sister - Ultra Violet

Kid Sister has continued the tradition of blurring any distinct differences between Rnb, electro and hip hop beyond being able to distinguish one from the other. The result of this distortion is either a mainstream car accident (Timbaland / Madonna) or a mashed up masterpiece (Timberlake / Timbaland). Thankfully in Kid Sister’s trustworthy and gloriously ornamented hands the challenge is met with effortless execution. What sets Kid Sister apart is that she is an artist in every sense to the word as opposed to a singer / rapper / puppet for someone else, typified by her inclination to delay the release of Ultra-Violet whilst she perfected her craft on every track. The proof is indeed in the pudding and she’s succeeded in producing a debut with very little filler.

Right Hand Hi starts the album off in grand fashion with the synths and beats destined for dance floors everywhere yet still feature her trademark rhymes. While it’s difficult to go past Right Hand Hi as the definitive example of how Kid Sister blends genres, the rhymes she puts together on the final track Control is first class. On tracks like the atmospheric Daydreaming we see Kid Sister displaying paparazzi-esque chorus melodies that would make Lady Gaga proud but going one step further with the addition of Cee-Lo’s genius.

It might just be a result of my pasty white skin and lack of “flayva” but I find Kid Sister’s whole vibe so richly old school infused yet still oozing pop sensibility. I’m not sure if I’m even qualified to be saying what is and isn’t old school as I was brought up on Rolling Stones & Beach Boys (white boy shit) but what I do know is that Kid Sister has carved out an image as a serious artist with powerful allies (Kanye West & Cee-Lo feature) whilst still maintaining the hotter than molten lava image that perhaps counterparts like Santigold and M.I.A lack ever so slightly.

Overall I think Kid Sister has stumbled on an eclectic pop balance between electro-dance beats for choruses and high paced old school rhymes to break up the tempo. Indeed the M.I.A like challenge now facing Kid Sister is evolving as in artist further into the unchartered territory which she only dipped her toes into or perhaps overlooked.
