2010 Honourable Mentions List
It's that time of year again. Last year I did a list of the songs which deserved praise however in 2010 with the final year studying going into overdrive it has been all about getting stuck into good quality albums. Before I mention all the exemplary albums that I enjoyed in 2010, I must give an extra special mention to John Butler Trio's April Uprising. If I ever had to do an assignment that was due the next morning, I could put on April Uprising and it was so mediocre it made it easy to concentrate because the alternative (i.e listening to JBT) was so awful it made assignmenting a breeze.
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
When my children are old enough to have learned swear words without my wife blaming me, I'll show them my beautiful dark twisted fantasy... oww and after that I might put on a Kanye West cd.
Highlights: The entire album.

Purchase
Born Ruffians - Say It
I commented to Chris recently that when Pitchfork review something (like Kanye) and our opinions allign I think they are modern day poets but when we disagree, well they're just arrogant. Say It was more criticised than critically acclaimed but I absolutely loved it. Fuck You Pitchfork.
Highlights: "What To Say", "Retard Canard" & "Sole Brothers"
WBDF Review: What To Say
Purchase
Girl Talk - All Day
I think Chris summed it up best "Girl Talk is proof that God wants us to party, all the time".
Highlights: "Let It Out", "Get It Get It" & "Triple Double"
WBDF Review: Ugly Girl Be Quiet
Purchase
Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt
Incredibly gifted vocalist, guitar player and story teller. His latest EP Sometimes The Blues Is A Passing Bird has shown his ability to expand his sound.
Highlights: "King of Spain", "Wild Hunt", "Troubles Will Be Gone" & "Burden of Tomorrow"
WBDF Review: I Will Fight This Stranger That You Should Fear
Purchase
Delta Spirit - History From Below
Thank you Delta Spirit for rekindling my love of guitar driven music. The best album I never got around to writing a singular review on.
Highlights: "Bushwick Blues", "Devil Knows You're Dead" & "Ballad Of Vitaly"
WBDF Review: Bushwick Blues Track Review
Purchase
Passenger - Flight Of The Crow
When I looked at the list of guests on this album I was very skeptical. Expecting a who's who of mediocrity it turned out to be an really listenable album thanks largely to the skill set that Passenger brings to the party.
Highlights: "Month Of Sundays", "Rivers" & "The One You Love"
WBDF Review: Idol Worth Hearing
Purchase
Dafoe - Self Titled
I could throw around all the raw, untapped talent superlatives but ultimately what I love about Dafoe is the EP conjured up feelings of my youth without it being the feelings that Disturbed, Incubus or Mudvayne bring to the surface where I sigh and question "where did you go so wrong?". The angst and energy of being young is channeled by Dafoe into something so much more unique and sophisticated than the rip my heart out and feed it to me brigade delivers.
Highlights: "Young Kevin" & "Knife Edge"
WBDF Review: Young Kevin, Oh How I Miss You
Purchase: Dafoe Bandcamp
Kid Sister - Ultraviolet
Technically this was released in Australia in 2010 so I'm sneaking it in. I thought this album would have attacked the mainstream with far greater success. When it was released very early in 2010 I was confident Kid Sister had the sound and the album to take over the world. I still thoroughly enjoy it and the album was by no means a failure. I'm confident world domination isn't too far off.
Highlights: "Right Hand Hi", "Life On Tv" & "Daydreaming"
WBDF Review: Kid Sister - Ultraviolet
Purchase
Emma Davis - Self Titled
I feel like Emma Davis sustains my earthly need for delicate folk just enough so I can avoid dressing in women's clothing or going on dates with sailor folk.
Highlights: "Picking Fruit", "Losing Faith" & "Feel A Thing"
WBDF Review: Just Another Lover For The Long Way Home
Purchase
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
White boy royalty. Super human craftsmen of intelligent, timeless electro pop. If it were anyone else this would come off sounding cheesy and forced but this is Hot Chip for fuck sake.
Highlights: "Thieves of the Night", "Hand Me Down Your Love", "I Feel Better" & "Alley Cats"
WBDF Review: Revenge of the Nerds
Purchase
Vampire Weekend - Contra
There has been enough said on this album. If you don't own it than you really are a fucking idiot or some kind of misguided anti-hipster. Contra is like the Stuart MacGill of 2010, it probably would have been the album of year if Kanye (Warner) didn't exist.
Highlights: "Horchata", "Diplomat's Son", "White Sky" & "California English"
WBDF Review: We Didnt Bother But Pitchfork Did
Purchase
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
I can't fully give myself up as a Gorillaz fan but I really have to admire the quality and longevity of the project. Looking back this cartoon band should have been condemned to the halls of novelty but instead they have sprawled out into this complex interwoven conceptual universe. I can't help but be fascinated especially when most of Damon Albarn's other work was very take it or leave it for my liking.
Highlights: "Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach", "Superfast Jellyfish" & "Some Kind Of Nature"
WBDF Review: Go For The Blogular
Purchase
The Honey Pies - Think Of England
Call it healthy optimism but despite not officially being released until January 10th 2011, I've no doubt this deserves it's place with an honourable mention. The EP comprising 4 demos that they released earlier this year was sensational. From the 8-10 times I've streamed the full length, it is undoubtedly a standout release of 2010. This is yet another release that makes you proud to be Australian. On 10th January, 2011 make the investment and purchase this one, you won't be disappointed.
Highlights: "Don't Mention The War", "Fool's In Love" & "Get It Right"
WBDF Review: I Sold My Soul, So I Could Be With You
