Splendour Selection #2 Your Old New Favourite Band
I know many of the Tame Impala / Wolfmother loving crowd would have scoffed at the inclusion of The Hives on the SITG '11 line up.
I can only imagine the endless legions of poo-pooing going on across irrelevant forums, moderated by overweight Halo gamers.
"What have they done lately?" / "Veni Vidi Vicious" was over a decade ago" / "I gave Tyrannosaurus Hives to my little brother years ago".
Now I had similar reservations about Scissor Sisters when they were on last years line up. As a young man I grooved to their self titled album in my bedroom. But of course I'd grown up, no way was I watching this poofo band with their shirtless gay singer.
I watched that poofo band and despite their music being undoubtedly rooted to the confines of the early naughties, I along with thousands of other Passion Pit loving Aussies, loved every minute of it. Especially the stripping...
There could be a more powerful message in there about my sexuality but the message I want you to get from it is that The Hives may not still be on the cusp of new music, don't forget everything you love / loved about them.
They've got a swag-full of cracking hits to purr through like "Hate To Say I Told You So", "Two Timing Touch & Broken Bones", "Well All Right", "Main Offender", "Tick Tick Boom", "Here We Go Again", "A Little More For Little You", "Abra Cadaver" and "Walk Idiot Walk" (below).
Not only a great selection of music to perform but the Southern-preacher-esque manner that Howlin' Pelle delivers their live set with is a treat in itself. A chance to be born again is not something you should pass up, I don't care if it clashes with fucking Bluejuice.
So if that isn't enough to pull you away from your Neon Indian album even if just for a few moments then go play in busy traffic.
