Love in C Minor

I found my DeLorean again, and this year in the relaunched whiteboydancefloor it is going to get a fair workout as I aim to do some serious crate digging and time traveling. Sure the car might be a little dusty, rust may be setting in inside the passenger door hinge and I don't own any 8-track tapes to play in that bizarre contraption in the dash. I got in, and here is where it went to.

The blueprint for house was created by Disco, which when you listen to music such as Cerrone's, you get a strange sense of deja vu, as it sounds like so much of the house music released over the past decade. All the music you hear in wanky bars today is heavily inflenced by this amazing period in music history.

C minor is the best key for love, apparently. And this sleazy and debaucherous disco sound is the best backing track for making some of that love. The sleaze is only heightened by Cerrone's disgraceful moustache and that incredibly filthy bass line.

MP3: Cerrone - Love in C Minor

MP3: Kebekelektrik - War Dance

Computer and music were in the early days of their courtship at this stage, and by the sound of Kebekelektrik's 'War Dance', they were keen to consumate the relationship. This is disco's equivalent of tantric, lengthy opuses of seductive and synthentic disco grooves that keep the enjoyment for around 9 minutes. Not quite how long it takes to get from wherever in the universe this music was made back to Earth, but long enough for me.

More recounts of my adventures from the 1970's discotheques to come..... And yes there will be some Moroder.

Get Awkward!

One of my favourite acts of 2006/2007 was a raucous bunch of teenagers called Be Your Own Pet. I bought the self titled debut album; I loved every minute of it as did many of the Whiteboydancefloor crew. It made me want to mess my room up and not clean it up, no matter how much trouble it got me it. That’s right I was willing to be banned from dessert and bike rides for a week, maybe even two!

Well they are back with a follow up and with a title like Get Awkward I couldn’t help but get myself into frenzy, ready to cause more rebel rousing in my household some two years on. I thought to myself, I’m 21 now, I’m practically an adult, I’m going to be so naughty when I listen to this album I might explode into a pillow fight if told to hush.

Now upon hearing some 3 or so tracks from the new album, I was left with a real puzzle. I still don’t know whether or not it is me or their music which has gotten old. Have Be Your Own Pet and Pix out grown each other?

After reading everyone else’s glowing reviews of how destined for further stardom these kids are, I thought it must be me. But then I thought again, as you do. I decided that Be Your Own Pet are the problem. There’s no progression in the mayhem and stagnant mayhem just isn’t mayhem now is it.

By no means am I saying that Be Your Own Pet is bad. I too remember that there are still far worse acts making money and there is definitely quality which I can see in tracks like “Black Hole” but it seems the edges in one of the roughest punk rock outfits have been smoothed out far too much.

Sorry Be Your Own Pet but I’ve felt more inspired to break stuff listening to Operator Please. Just put me down as one of those sophomore album haters.

Bury The Past

Wow. Holy shit. I decide to come and have a look over here and the whole damn things changed. Well, not really. Moreso just the logo and the colour of the wallpaper but hey I dig it and we don't care if you don't.

Personally, I just can't take a step into the fray that is 2008 without letting you all know my self-indulgent opinion of the year gone by. Yes I'm aware that t
heres only a few more days of February and that hence the significance of my opinion is less and less but eat my balls and read away anyway.. so here they are +drumroll+ Javid's best and worst of 2007.

The Best

For me personally 2007 saw someone who traditionally digs their metal and rock and generally guitar-based music expand my own horizons to let the other guys influence me in a slightly more digital direction. Artists I'd never heard and would probably never listen to were brought to my attention through the wonders of Triple J and general exploration and THIS helped me come to the one and only PNAU. Sure it's their third release and I had basically not acknowledged their existence. I've now managed to catch them live multiple times, have the album and Ive boarded the bandwagon. Easily one of the best albums of last year.

You wont find many bloggers that didn't have an opinion on
Muscles and the surrounding hype projected him to a very 'you love him or you hate him' status. I know which side of the fence I'm on. And come on, we've got to look beyond this year. Love him or hate him there was no escaping the elated and eccentric phenomenon. Supporting Daft Punk and whoring himself around some of the biggest festivals as well as constant radio play has shown someone who should beat Operator Please for 'Breakthrough Artist'. The world is this mans oyster in 2008.

While electro-music dominated the scene it certainly doesn't mean that rock took a back seat. The ballsy rock sounds make their way overseas from the UK in the form of Arctic Monkeys, The Fratellis and The Kaiser Chiefs. All three are incredibly listen worthy, all three I managed to catch live last year and all three did not disappoint. If my opinion were more significant and you people cared I'd give the gong to Yours Truly, The Angry Mob - an entry with its head held above the rest for 2007.

While my counterparts might imply that 2007 wasn't the best year for music, I tend to disagree. My developing CD collection, my developing tastes and my developing pubic hair make me see that there's a whole lot worse out there.

On the live front Splendour once again showed us why its so much better than the Big Day Out. Lees and West need to get their heads on straight and go back to remembering what makes a GOOD festival. Its not just about the bands and its certainly not about the excessive price for a one day festival which makes you miss alot of the bands you were after anyway. And of course if you're like me, your year ended on a sublime live music note with the arrival of Daft Punk on our shores for a show that I am CERTAIN no one who was there will ever forget. Nothing will match it.... until Rammstein come back anyway.

As with the two sides of a coin for some good there must be some bad. And here it is - Ill try to be brief because I know half of you have already tuned out.

THE WORST

Where to begin. Soco infuriated me to the point of writing the lyrics for a parody song with possibly the worst song of the year - 'Ill kill her' (my sentiments exactly). I could put on a stupid French accent to try and make myself sound adorably sweet while trying to be ironic and maniacal. Instead I take a torch to you, your name and everything you stand for. INTO THE BIN!

While bloggers and media reviewers all over the world were creaming themselves silly over Band Of Horses I myself was trying not to scratch my eyeballs out every time I heard the shit. Honestly. Who was sitting in the studio and said 'lets put some church-like delay on my vocals... yeah.. cool.. now lets put some on the guitar.. yeah.. cool.. now lets let the whole album sound like that..
mm yeah.. now send in that chihuahua and a jar of peanut butter'. I'm all for personal expression but honestly what the FUCK (thats right, i said it) is the deal with the fuss over this album? Worst of the year. Dont even use it as a coaster, itd be an insult to beer. 'I could sleep.. I could sleeeeeep' - so could I. INTO THE BIN!

And last, but certainly not least (for years to come no doubt) is Operator Please. I was on the same side as these guys at the start. Was happy to see some kids doing well and the album was catchy with some nice pop-driven melodies. A few months later and a few THOUSAND plays of the ping-pong song later and I annoint them with a 'That Got Old Quick' award. They'll do a Franz Ferdinand and release a follow-up this year, which will also do well, and then we wont hear from them for a while. Maybe its just the cynic and bitter, resentful old muso in me that gets irritated by the success of virtual kids as well but yeah - over it. And it wont be too much longer before alot of you who aren't already in the same boat will be. Still... give that violinist a few years...

And that wraps it up for now. With that finally out of the way I can bring you a whole new bunch of information you dont care about for this year! The team is back and like a pack of Hyenas we're looking for the scraps of someone elses dignity to feast on since we're all out of our own. We look forward to 2008 and we hope you do too. Until next time

New Music: Hot Chip

I thought I'd start off the year on a positive contrary to our usual negativity. In short, Hot Chip are so tragically uncool white boys and of course we love that! Made in the Dark is at the very least a solid follow up to the resounding success of The Warning. You'll have those who will criticise the more experimental sound of tracks like "We're looking for a lot of love" but really I think the title of the album itself is a preemptive clue as to the direction Hot Chip were looking to achieve. For me, Hot Chip are without question like the finest chefs of their musical styling and Made in the Dark says that rather than sifting through the melting pot of ideas and trying to produce one succinct main meal, they’ve opted to give us a 13 course sampling experience (which anyone who knows anything about five star dining will agree is better). At times they do indeed stretch their wings arguably a little further than their culinary skills would allow them to master but even in my harshest moments I could not say they are far off getting there.

Personally I love it, including the more outside the bag Hot Chip tracks on the album. But not for a second will I sit here and tell you they’ve pioneered something totally different with these tracks and came up with an immortal end product. I mean the songs are nice and for those who enjoy good music, nice is without doubt good enough.

I think we should be thankful they didn’t decide to package their brand of electro anymore commercially pop predictable so as to attract the same scum who latch their thirsty fangs on the likes of Sneaky Sound System & Daft Punk. As “Shake a fist” suggests while Hot Chip are great musicians in many respects, lovable tunes for white boys to dance badly to is what they should stick with. Luckily though for the devoted few, Hot Chip still paddle to far on the weird side to interest these demons, but I tell you the ice is getting thinner.

Arrival

Hello to everyone out there in the blogosphere,

It has indeed been a very long time, probably too long from my side of things. I hope this year is going to be far more productive than the tail end of last year. With a new job and the settling in period well and truely finished it is time for us to get into the music.

But not today. Think of today as a touching base exercise.

Last year for me was a fairly dull year from where I stood, what stood out did so even more in comparison to its counterparts. Unfortunately for everyong Muscles or Battles there was a new Bon Jovi album or a Fergie single. I'm sure many of you would just say I wasn't looking hard enough but I mean really overall the year was fairly uninspiring.

For every Daft Punk concert there was yet another Big Day Out sprinkled with only a small amount of quality which you really had to search for. On the topic of Big Day Out 2008, well I guess it is something to do and it does serve as a handy sampler plate.

Rage Against the Machine were one dimensional and a carbon copy of their cds, I proudly left to watch the wonders of LCD Soundsystem, Grafton Primary were smashing and Battles were mind boggling (literally).

So while I'll keep it short, I hope for 2008 that we have some quality releases from the likes of Cut Copy, Van She Tech, The Presets and for me personally I'll hold out another yet for another AC/DC album which I can "rock" out too with the other labourer scum whom I work with. And finally, bring on the surprises, the acts out of no where that set the world on fire!

Death to 50 Cent, Give Rise to Spank Rock.

We can only dream.

Looking forward to the year ahead my good people!

Love you all

Guess who's back?!

Who is back? Well whiteboydancefloor is back of course.

After much discussion, the wbdf crew have decided to shake things up around here and give the house a fresh coat of paint, buy some new furniture, dust out the rugs, empty the garbage bin and take on a new tenant.

In 2008, we will be doing some more crate digging, freshly squeezing more new tunes, informing you on what the suits of the biz are up to and recounting our live music adventures. We will be bringing you new columns and features, such as the new ‘whiteboydanceoff’ which you will find out what that is all about in good time...

We acknowledge that lately we have lost some of our venom. Let me assure you, myself, Pix and Javid have got our fangs back and we are ready to tear apart anything we deem worthy of a savaging. If it is rubbish, you will know about it. It may even be your favourite artist we are destroying. But that is part of the fun of what we do.

But at the same time, we haven’t forgotten the love. If we love it, we will tell you. We are passionate about what we love, and we hope our passion will make you unable to resist walking straight out of your house and purchasing whatever it is we are loving.

We have recruited a new member into the wbdf crew. Clint, aka Le Pony Boy has posted on a guest basis for us before but will now be living here permanently, giving you his take on the world of music from the perspective of a tastemaking, discotheque-loving, sexually ambiguous DJ.

We hope you will all stay with us for the second coming of our humble site, and we thank all of you that have been nutty enough to actually check back on us to see if we are still alive. Don’t call the undertaker, we are still alive and we will make sure that our ‘favourite’ artists know it. Im looking at you Spazzys.

Cheers,

Chris
