Not Your Saviour

The musical lifespan of a band is not until the idea of dog years. A year in the life of your average joe is seven in band years. So as far as band years go, Papa vs Pretty is older than the majority of musical band hopping whores who bandy the term 'side project' around frivolously. Thank god there are not musically transmitted diseases.

Papa vs Pretty in collaboration with friend and filmmaker Ben Wilson have gone about making an 8 part series called "From the Bunker" which showcases Papa vs Pretty in the recording process. The whole concept is simple and very digestible as it lends itself to the youtube (or in this case vimeo) world we live in.

Quite frankly I'm sick to death of hearing how old these guys are, or more so how young these guys are, its fucking irrelevant. What I am not sick of hearing is how good Papa vs Pretty is. But in classic Sydney style, we cling to anything awesome that we can call our own just so Melbourne doesn't have all the interesting things like Tiger Woods.

What impresses me about Papa vs Pretty is that rather than succumbing to the vice-grip pressure that Sydney siders place upon them, they instead march on with their musical endeavours continuing to experiment with bending genres with Jungle Train. Sydney might want the next uber-hip indie pop hit to shove in Melbournian faces and get the Bang Gang to remix it, but Papa vs Pretty couldn't give a shit. I love living in Sydney but the stupidity of our licensing laws is ridiculous, the track Club 77 where the band was denied the chance to play a set at a venue of the same name because they were under age.

However intentional or unintentional it may be, in the form of the raw soaring bliss that is 'Piper' , Papa vs Pretty deliver on a major scale.

I think Kevin Rudd seems happy to throw out money for futile endeavours like his wife's stylist, I can see no reason why emerging genius like this shouldn't be given unlimited Commonwealth resources instead.
