Definately Maybe Not

The first band I ever got into, being brought up on what were considered oldies, was Queen, they're still one of my favourite bands to date but the mantle of favourite was eventually surpassed by one of the definitive rock bands of the 90's - Oasis.

What was not to like about one of the biggest publicity machines in the world?

'Definately Maybe' - fastest selling debut album in British history (at the time)
'(Whats the Story) Morning Glory?' - easily one of the greatest rock albums of all time let alone of its era.

And everything that followed, the highs and lows of a band that had two warring brothers, one of them being a contemporary songwriting genius, changing members and playing to millions of people all over the world. Everyone knows Oasis and it cannot, whether you like the early, the middle, the new or all of it, be denied that they released some fucking awesome music.

So like some (and unlike others) I was quite sad to read a statement from Noel the other day:

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

Some of you won't care. Maybe even Liam wont. They've replaced all the original members except themselves, so who knows what he might do. I personally think you'll find that you can't replace a Gallagher in Oasis (especially the important one).

I was lucky enough to see Oasis 3 times, including front and centre against the fence. These memories will live on for a long time, especially the solo acoustic version of 'Wonderwall' by Noel at the Enmore in 2002. Sigh. Heres hoping this is just another bump in the road that Oasis are on, theres an apology and a reconciliation.. or an intervention instead (see what I did there?) but for now I guess it's adios to a historically significant band.

You Think I Care?

Goddam. I come onto this blog for the first time in ages and.. for a second.. had thought i'd stumbled into a virtual gay-bar. I really need to stop affiliating myself and my reputation with this place.. oh wait.. I dont have a reputation...

Are you, like myself, someone who completed certification in music industry studies but who ended up working somewhere completely different doing something you really didnt anticipate instead touring the world, candying up your nose and having promiscuous sex with groupies? Well its never too late to try and get back into it, so they say.

The Big Sound 2009 Music Industry Summit and Showcase is being held in two weeks. This really IS one of those things where people from all over the industry (managers, producers, label CEO's, booking agents as well as bands themselves) are rubbing shoulders and inadvertantly touching bumcheeks because they're all standing too close to each other. Here, a Quote!:

Run across three days and nights you can meet, talk, and listen to the brightest lights in the music industry as they muse on topics from the emergence of new technology to the viability of the Australian festival circuit, and when the lights go down 50 of the country's hottest bands will showcase their music to the world in some of Brisbanes best venues.

And where are the music blogs in this? Probably in a shed out the back where they stuff in bloggers and their self-perceived antagonism of the giant money making machine that is the industry.

People you may get the chance to rub shoulders/bumcheeks with include Glen Wheatley (you know, that guy that managed Farnsey and then tried to manage Delta before her mum fired him), as well as historically significant songwriter and producer Van Dyk Parks. More famous for his work with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys than his work with Silverchair, Parks has a career spanning DECADES of lofty heights. Theres also the usual collection of publishers, label execs and such.

If this is your thing, or it isnt but you want to get into it, then make sure you're in Brisbane between the 9-11 of September. Will we send a correspondent? Probably not. But despite this it would still no doubt be a highly informative few days with some good bands inbetween.

It don't matter if you're black or white?

Well apparently so when it comes to cognitive responsiveness in relevance to a blog environment. Yes the scheme has changed, welcome to the shiny and new whiteboydancefloor!

Being black or white obviously didn't matter when it came to getting me on as a new writer for whiteboydancefloor, for i'm neither white nor black nor a boy. I'm a commie/soccer riot loving Melbournian female. Is it time to make a Michael Jackson joke yet? Does anyone still remember that guy? No? OK, good. Moving right along before I start on my MJ is dead stand up comedy routine and get hate mail....

Obsessively stalking a group of blog writers can sometimes work out for you and land you your very own writing spot, like it did for me. That's like the holy grail of blog stalking. If this were the movies i'd be sleeping with them one by one and then killing them off. Luckily for them I really don't have the desire or energy for murder.

Hello, Nancy Magoo here. I'm supposed to be introducing myself, but i'm just trying not to make it sound like a dating agency type deal. I really don't like long walks along the beach and if you start talking about my star sign i'll probably want to punch you in throat.

Hmmmmm let me see. I abhor hippies, middle of the road pop and southern cross tattoos. I adore good music, gin, drinking gin whilst listening to good music and liver failure.

Enjoy! Feel free to send me gin and or music.

I got soul but I'm not a Killers fan.

Kid Cudi is a fool.
Kayne West is a bigger fool with bigger talent.
And Common is just one of the most gifted artists and lyricists there is.
All held together by a chopped up Lady Gaga "Poker Face"...wtf?

I'm at a loss to understand how all this comes together and if I was a more dedicated blogger I might go googling and find out.

But would you really care? It changes nothing. Make her say is in the same vein as other lighter Kayneisms like Heard em Say.

This latest one I like and I don't know whether or not that's acceptable as far as street cred goes.

Weekend Music

So it's well into the first day of the weekend but who cares, I figure I'd give you a sample of what's getting me through my weekend, even if it may be too late for you to share in it, this is as live as it gets people!

As a blogger, what burns me most is when there is a cd / mp3 sent to me and due to bad luck, a messy room or my current mood, I miss an absolutely piece of gold. Bon Iver is a perfectly example of the one that got away. I had their album very early on and by the time I got to it, I'd blown my shot at appearing like I'm hip.

While still not burning fresh compared to some of those music thirsty blogging vampires, I present you Girls. Nooo, not those kinds of girls, Girls from San Fran. Noo not those kind of girls either, just Girls with a killer song called "Hellhole Ratrace". Get the Song & Check the Clip! Has a real slow burner quality like Odawas but not Odawas if you get me.

Mp3: Girls - Hellhole Ratrace

Girls @ Myspace

So now that I'm back @ Uni, I'm sure you can guess what I have spent my entire Friday Night / Saturday doing can't you?

If you answered jamming out Mountains Goats tracks from The Sunset Tree & Tallahassee you'd be 100% correct. Up the Wolves, Game Shows Touch Our Lives, No Children, First Few Desperate Hours Dance Music and this fine song...

Honestly I'm still yet to see a band impress me as much in concert and I doubt there are many who can do what John Darnielle does. Vocals and lyrics are just something bigger than you and me!

Here is something alittle fun. Try reading this.

Having trouble?... Try standing a bit further away from the screen & have another go. I like shit like this, if you do too, click here.

Oww and finally... this is a clip of Nancy Magoo and her peeps on an average weekend. Go to the Peter, Bjorn & John clip below to see.

Jokes aside, was it just me being a really poor follower of music or is it that underrated but how did I miss this gem of a new release from Peter, Bjorn & John. It's ace! Move over young folks...

Youtube: Peter, Bjorn & John - Nothing to Worry About

I can't embed it because there record label are obviously a bunch of dicks (God i hope whoever that is doesn't currently send me free stuff or I'm screwed).

Enjoy your weekend people.

The Audacity of Simian

I am a huge Simian Mobile Disco fan and I think this is the first time I can confidently say they have successfully delivered an entire full length album packed with diverse quality.

The clip I have for you today is Audacity of Huge and aside from the track being a solid electronic number, the colour and vibrance of the clip is sensational also. I will admit there are many people doing these sorts of music videos, however if you listen to the way the very random lyrics and visuals match makes you wonder what came first, the lyric or the clip?

Ok so everyone knows the lyric came first and it's stupid of me to even pose that question.

Here is a remix for you all aswell

MP3: Audacity of Huge" (Naum Gabo Remix) MP3

SEE Clint isn't the only one who knows remixes :-P

They Don't Care About Us

Hey guys, I'll be brief (I got meat pies cooking away).

I highly reccomend you give this track a try. It has got to pop up somewhere. Car ad, Canon Ad, iTunes ad, SOMETHING. A uber cool indie supergroup (i know you've heard that before) but they produce some really interesting music. They're a throwback to a time when things made more sense with more drugs. This is easily their finest track.

Mp3: The Phenomenal Handclap Band - 15-20
Cheers to Berkeley Place for the link.

It's difficult to find something about Dappled Cities that isn't awesome. They're back with a new clip for the track "The Price" and they launched their latest full length in typically cool fashion. They hired out 12 Kenards Hire storage spaces and invited 12 up and coming artists to decorate these spaces with each track off the album as inspiration. The results are stunning and the finest photographer going round Daniel Boud was there to take some snaps. Click Here to see all the astounding photos. Now as far as the actual track goes, it's solid but it does have that Luke Steele told us what to do feel to it. Still brilliant, but it isn't Holy Chord.
