RIP Alex Chilton

Alex Chilton

The most important figure in power-pop, Alex Chilton, frontman of the most important band in power-pop, Big Star, sadly passed away last week at the age of 59.

Big Star, formed in Memphis in 1971, were the template for the breezy and sometimes bittersweet sounds of the power-pop genre. Big Star should have been one of the biggest bands of the 70s. Despite near universal critical acclaim, due to label disinterest they were never as popular as they deserved to be.

Even if you haven't heard of this wonderful band yet, you probably have heard them a thousand times (sort of) without even knowing it (the theme song to That 70's Show is basically "In The Street"). Big Star and Chilton were hugely influential, with their Beatles and Beach Boys influenced sounds later covered by the likes of Elliot Smith, Cheap Trick and Jeff Buckley. REM cite Big Star as a massive influence, and The Replacements loved them so much they recorded a song in 1987 titled "Alex Chilton". The incredible impact that Chilton and Big Star have had on the world of music is undeniable.

I adore this band. Please listen to this band below and buy some of their music (the #1 Record/Radio City double reissue is the best example of this band in its prime). Alex Chilton deserves your love. RIP
