One Of These Days

I leave for Germany in 2 days. That excites me. Oktoberfest, beer, eurotrip, etc - its going to be great. I've been looking forward to it for most of what has been, overall, a quite disappointing year. And then after I get back, thats about it really. Until festival season resumes - YAY!

So the third Soundwave announcement has come out much to the chagrin of those who don't care and to, well, less of said chagrin for those who do. Theres a nice little variety of acts that I've never heard of or am only vaguely familiar with - ie. Amity Affliction, Feeder, H20 and Coheed and Cambria (aren't they types of cheese or something?). There are also a few I'm more familiar with, for better or worse such as the comically entertaining Murderdolls, the annoying Bullet For My Valentine as well as my guilty pleasure - despite numerous lineup changes - the black metal gods of Dimmu Borgir in the country for the first time. While I can't say too many of these acts enhance my excitement Dimmu are quite a score. Just watch out you don't get covered in mascara from sweaty teen goths on a hot afternoon.

The other band, and supposedly the biggest band of this announcement is One Day As A Lion. Does the name John Theodore sound familiar? Probably not as much as the name Zach de la Rocha. Basically the former RATM frontman and Mars Volta drummer have established their own project. While it sounds NOTHING like the Mars Volta (unfortunately) it is VERY heavy on Zachs raps. The musicianship and depth of Rage have been withdrawn for some guy who noodles along on a heavily distorted synth in a very Wolfmother-esque fashion. He doesn't even get a mention. How these guys are able to be considered of headline quality when they've only released a 5 track EP is beyond me. When you have a drummer who has played with TMV, you need to use him for his uncannily freakish abilities, technique, and speed, not have him playing an admittedly tight but simple straight 4 while you go on some wanky rap. I think everyone would be happier if each of these men went to their original starting points. I love the Mars Volta, I love Rage Against The Machine. THIS bores me. Would I see it live? There would have to be NOTHING ELSE on.

So there you go. For more information, all the bands, ticketing info and a pirate themed website, just go on over to the Soundwave site and try get yourself a ticket. Maybe I'll see you there, but just remember if these two bands clash I'll be watching Dimmu. At least something entertaining might happen. Ha.

See you all in a few weeks!
