5-1 Top 10 Party Tracks pt. 2 (Part 1. here)
So by now I've realised what the components are that make up a good party tune. You need to be able to sing along with it (at least to the chorus), it needs to be uptempo & it needs to be well known enough that most people at your party can recognise what song it is. Bonus points it if has hand claps in it, parts you can shout and makes you attempt dance moves that make you look like you're having seizure.
I also take no responsibility if you use this list and your party fails to recognise the songs. You should just question the tastes of your attendees instead.
5. Whip It - Devo
Who doesn't love a bit of 80's new wave? That was rhetorical because everyone does. Campy, quirky fun . Bonus points if you know the words to the verses.
4. Gay Bar - Electric Six
Even the "manliest" of men who are so insecure about their sexuality and steer away from "those f'ing fags" will ironical sing and dance along to this song. This also provides that drunken overtly sexual song that people can giggle at whilst intoxicated. "I've got something to put in you"...oh you!
3. Alright - Supergrass
Hey I'm not old, I'm young and free just like in the lyrics of this song. I don't care that everyone at this club is 18. Funster Brit Pop with simplistic lyrics and a melody that makes your soul feel all warm and fuzzy...youthful, don't forget youthful.
2. Lust For Life - Iggy Pop
When the beat kicks in at the start you'd be forgiven if you thought it was the start of a Jet song. Jet aren't fond of originality. As the old proverb goes, "Everything good Jet does isn't original and everything original isn't good." Anyways enough about them. Whenever I go out, I'll pretty much request this song 90% of the time. It makes you shake your hips along with the beat and daydream about how amazing Iggy Pop is.
1. Pump It Up - Elvis Costello
Even though The Rogue Traders butchered the hook and had Izzy from Neighbours squeal over it attempting to look 21 in the film clip, I still adore this song. Elvis Costello is in my opinion the epitome of cool, (well equal with Iggy Pop). His geek chic cool is so blatant in this clip that he can wail his heart out about masturbation and I don't even notice until I read about it in an article on Top 10 songs about "self pleasure". Oh and he kept his splendid geekiness, unlike others.....Evermore. (I have a story about them for another time. It involves me drunkenly berating their band inspired by one of Pix's blog entries.) Also a mark of a good song is that it doesn't lose it's charm and playability over the years. This one is from 1978!
Special Mention goes to:
Baby I Got Your Money - ODB
Standing In The Way Of Control - The Gossip
I Bet That You Look Good On The Dance Floor - Arctic Monkeys
Push It - Salt n Pepa
Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones
Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
Weekend - Black Eyed Peas (pre meth head)
Are You The One? - The Presets
Four Kicks or The Bucket - Kings Of Leon
Over & Over - Hot Chip
Groove Is In The Heart - Dee Lite
Bombs Over Baghdad - Outkast
All My Friends Are Dead - Turbonegro
And that's it. Hope it wasn't anti-climatic like when you watch a music countdown and they always put Smells Like Teen Spirit at #1.
HAPPY RECORD STORE DAY!
