The Serious Moonlight.

David Bowie to headline the Big Day Out?
Please please please let it be true. I have not been impressed with the last 3 line ups. This would definitely make up for it.

I haven't seen an official line up, but these are aparently some of the acts.
Muse, David Bowie, Placebo, Massive Attack, Kasabian, Lily Allen, Jet, Groove Armada, Rise Against, The Mars Volta, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Calvin Harris, Foals, Mastodon, Dizzee Rascal, Girl Talk, Powderfinger, Josh Pyke, The Dead Weather, Grinspoon, The Temper Trap, Karnivool, Monsters of Folk, Tame Impala, Dappled Cities, The Middle East, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Regular John and Former Child Stars.

Now for some Bowie goodness.

Push & Shove

I could go into another long and drawn out crush post where I gush over Papa vs Pretty, but all you need to do is watch the video.

This is the latest installment in their From the Bunker sessions and it's called "Astronaut". Definitely a toss up between this and "Piper" for my favourite.

With a little bit of gold & a pager.

If you're not an absolute idiot like me and got Parklife tickets, I beg of you to go and check out hip hop duo The Cool Kids. They came out with one of my favourite albums from last year 'The Bake Sale', actually one of my favourite albums of all time. They have booming bass lines and rhymes that reference anything from riding bicycles, cereal, daily dramas, pop culture, gaming systems and typical everyday shenanigans. This is definitely not "gangsta" it's more of a Lupe Fiasco type of thing.

I missed out on seeing them at St Jeromes Laneway Festival a couple of years ago and now I'm going to miss out again. So while I'm kicking myself you must go and see them. While you're doing that, take a mental note of everything that happens and then I can live vicariously through you.

I Like Art But Science Is Confusing

It seems the new talk of Electronica town is Art vs. Science.
So after hearing their track, Parlez Vous Francais? on the J's I found myself humming the tune while looking for music in JB and subsequently purchased the EP, much to my surprise.

Now I don't really think of myself as a massive fan of electronic music, but I do own a small collection of the music that I consider interesting enough to stick on my Ipod.

Although Midnight Juggernauts are on my Ipod too and I have no idea why as their music simply makes me want to ram my head against a very hard wall. I've seen those guys twice at festival gigs and my GOD they are the most boring three people I have ever seen. I mean, why do they have to just stand there? Why can't they just do something? Anything? Their stage presence (or lack thereof) combined with that same monotonous singing tone and tempo for each song puts me to sleep. At a festival! With *Illicit substances!! That takes fucking talent.
I don't know, maybe that's their angle and why so many people like them. Sorry if you do. Well actually, no i'm not. They should get more interesting.

For God's sake men, do SOMETHING!

Mp3: Midnight Juggernauts - This New Technology

But moving right along; Art vs. Science.
The self titled EP came out earlier this month and it is quite good. They clearly know their stuff when it comes to making catchy, boppy music. From what I hear they also put on an amazing live show, although I'm yet to experience.
Unfortunately though I think once the novelty has worn off they will simply fall victim to the 'skip track' button. Already there are 2 songs on the 5 track EP that instantly get the skip treatment if they happen to make their way onto my shuffle list.

While I can understand that these guys may very well be an amazing live band, the CD version doesn't do them a lot of justice. Their non single tracks like Friend in the Field and Take Me To Your Leader just get a bit repetitive after a while. Of course that's what a lot Electronic is all about I hear you say. Well, quite frankly unless I were to be chewing my face off in some club or party somewhere, I don't think they will be getting a high rotation on my playlist.

I can see why people may like them and I'm interested to see them live. But as for home listening, I think once I'm sick of their radio songs, I won't have much time for the band. Perhaps a live show will change my mind. I think that's needed for bands like this (except of course Midnight Juggernauts who are extremely terrible live.)

But their new EP is out now and it's probably worth a listen. Or maybe even two if you feel.

A Quick Triumvirate

I went to the CD store recently and bought 3 recently-released CDs. Here now is where I will critique them for you and let you know whether its worth the trip down to your shop, or even the move over to iTunes for you lazy bastards. So, here we go

Muse - The Resistance
Had to get it. Im a Muse fan from a while back, I've seen them live and sung their praises from many rooftops especially in the faces of other Muse-haters who belong to this blog. I had very high expectations for this album. Following Blackholes and Revelations was going to be hard in its own right but all the hype and lead-up led me to believe that this would be epic. And in a way it is, but not how I imagined. I read reviews that talked about how much new ground this CD covers, and I have to wonder where this new ground is exactly. In the liner notes? Its good, yes, but nothing new and incredibly self indulgent (even for my liking). They're moving away from what I like about Muse but this happens to alot of bands. The bits that catch the ears attention only do so because Freddie Mercury and the guys from Queen did them 20-30 years ago with less production but more nobility. Make your own mind up, but me? - 6/10

Bluejuice - The Head of the Hawk
I like Bluejuice, live. On record they've never really done it for me as much as they have with their infectious energy, and I kind of picked this up on a whim. When I saw them at the Big O earlier this year they played ALOT of new stuff and it sounded promising. The commercial promotion is going pretty hard but I thought I'd make my own mind up. Catchy riffs, great melodies with typical bluejuice harmonies, but a bit of diversity too, from the boppy dub-step groove of Mrs Johnston and Facelift to something a bit more mature with 'Work' and 'Telling The Truth' plus good old straight rock with something like 'Broken Leg'. This album covers a surprising amount of avenues and is very easily listenable. A perfect pick me up to get the groove back in your step before Summer - 8/10

Basement Jaxx - Scars
Everyone here knows I'm a huge BJ fan (and I like Basement Jaxx too - buh dum pssh) and given that I'd already heard 'Scars' and 'Shes No Good' I was looking forward to this album. Guest appearances galore all over the shop, but my personal favourite would have to be the guest appearance from Santigold on the track 'Saga'. There are alot of good songs on this album but the thing I've never liked about most dance albums is the way the tracks are arranged. They always seem to lose focus towards the end, but that being said, they havent done it as much as some have done and for that I have to be thankful. Luckily theres enough good stuff in here (appearances from Sam Sparro, Kelis, Lightspeed Champion and even Yoko Ono) to stop you paying too much attention to these minute details. Fun, and thats the main thing - 7.5/10

So there you go. Enjoy. Or not. I dont care. Have a good week.

Oh reckless abandon!

Chris & Sarah - Honkytonks 2006.

Although it's super trendy to like The Temper Trap, I can't fight the hype and like many of you, really do like them. As it is final season for the AFL and they've been using 'Sweet Disposition' in the adverts, I can't get this song out of my head. Here is a little remix for you.

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition Curtis Vodka Remix

Thank God it's Friday (For you)

So the best part of the week is only hours away for many of you. I'm sure you can smell the freedom, the sharp scent of brandy (ok most of you are probably more vodka red bull plebs), the drunken bitches, the swanky night clubs with the cover charges that are all the same once you walk inside and how could I forget, the douche bags with collared shirts that walk into you. The man in the photo above is Nates... he knows how to party... since I never get to party with him anymore, I thought I'd immortalise his beautiful face in whiteboy folklore.

It's not hard to tell I'm bitter... the weekends are for the living.

Mind you if you want to come visit myself or Javid... we do great steak.
Some cool tracks to get you weekends going :)

Mp3: Malente & Dex feat. Analogik - Gypsi Kings
Don't know a thing about the origins of this track, but it oozes the cool factor. The sax is really mischievous and I am a total sucker for any raspy dude that throws out random barking type noises throughout. Imagine finishing early on a friday and going mental, getting pissed mid afternoon, in the sun, at your favourite open air bar setting... Coogee anyone?

Mp3: Soft Pack - Extinction
On first listen, a very primitive track. On second listen, A very primitive track. If it takes you more than three to work out this track is brilliant, head to your nearest cliff and jump off it.

Mp3: Ernest Ellis - Heading for the Cold
It's as if this track is fighting against its own catchyness. Despite the name, when I hear tracks like this one, I'm uplifted at the arrival of spring. Definitely got that kind of sunny vibe to it. Oww don't forget that it has got some great hand clap potential.

Mp3: Heads we Dance - Model 21 (Justin Faust Remix)
These guys are favourites at whiteboydancefloor. I really get the polyester girl theme from this track, not because it sounds similar but because it embraces beautiful love that can be shared (illegally) between man and machine. Well... at least that is the twisted message I took from it haha. Our millions of twitter fans would already have this one.

three emcees & one deejay!

If you know me, you've probably seen me wearing my beloved Beastie Boys tshirt and/or seen me drunkenly trying to be a b-girl. I love love love the Beastie Boys. I almost broke down crying like a tween who has just spotted Zac Efron (Yeah I still know my tween pop culture references) when I saw them at the 2005 Big Day Out. I was quite delirious but heat stroke may have played a part in that.

Following The Beatles re-issues comes the Beastie Boys digitally re-released album 'Hello Nasty'. This includes 21 bonus tracks of "rarities & skits". On October 30th, the physical re-release of the album will include a limited edition 4-album vinyl release (1,500 copies) that includes the digital download as well as an "8 panel gatefold package, lenticular cover, and hardcover ‘coffee table book’ case.

MCA not too long ago revealed that he had a cancerous tumor that was found in his parotid gland on the left side of his neck by his lymph nodes. Although treatable the guys decided to cancel their summer touring schedule to give the due time for his recovery. Get well soon and I hope it doesn't ruin your amazing raspy voice.

Besides that whole Kanye vs Taylor thing at the latest VMA awards. The highlight for me was that the Beastie Boys won a belated moonman for their filmclip 'Sabotage', directed by my all time favourite director Spike Jonze.

Findings from the Mailbox

I don't think there is a blogger with a pulse that doesn't love having sensational music sent directly to them. While of course 90% of it is total bullshit from pathetic little promo email whores, there are those finds which make you get excited about the whole process. These two are tracks that have been filling my trips to and from work all weekend.

Sometimes I think a good song is all that stops me from intentionally crashing my car to avoid another weekend of working.

Youtube: Alberta Cross - ATX
I must be careful when going over the top, but all I can say about Albert Cross is that their full length Broken Side of Time makes me really feel something. I cannot fully explain it but it makes me very moody, really powerful album. ATX is brilliant and has some really hypnotic guitar but it isn't an accurate reflection of the entire album, get your hands on Broken Side of Time and give tracks like "Song 3Three Blues" & "Old Man Chicago" a crack.

Mp3: Bridezilla - Beaches
I saw these guys at the first Playground Weekender. They left the small but appreciative audience totally spellbound. I am convinced they are some kind of enchantresses who enslave me under their sounds. Beaches does nothing to disprove this conspiracy. They continue to smash the high expectations I have set them and are making all the right noises overseas. Definite inductees into the White boy Total Babes Hall of Fame...gallery coming soon...or not.

Just a final tid bit... if you didn't get down to Hermann's Bar this weekend just gone to check James De La Cruz' (Avalanches fame) new monthly called Somethin' Else. I suggest you keep checkin' this space for the next one because it's totally fab. Dj's playing what they want, how they want, because they want. None of this RNB 9-11 and Electro 11-1 bullshit.

Join the Facebook group and make sure you keep your eyes and ears primed for October's installment of this fine night!

Twerk

A preview from the upcoming 5th album, Scars brought to you by the amazingness that is Basement Jaxx. This album will feature such artists as Lightspeed Champion, Santigold, Kelis, Yoko Ono & Australia's own Sam Sparro. The CD drops on the 21st of September. Take note Simian Mobile Disco, this is how you do feature singers on your tracks.

Jan van Nuenen created an animation exclusively for the song "Scars" by Basement Jaxx. The animation can now be seen during their European tour of 2009, where it is used at the beginning of the performance.

A few of the tracks are up on their myspace page, so go have a listen.

Got To Get You Into My Life

Today (the 9th of September) marks the day that EMI release the entire remastered catalogue of The Beatles, with both the original mono versions of the first 10 Beatles albums, up through The Beatles (The White Album), in addition to the all-stereo versions. This will allow listeners to hear intricacies of the songs that weren't able to be picked up with previous recordings. Maybe you'll even be able to hear Lennon be a disagreeable twat and ignoring his son Julian whilst he indulged in self righteousness with Yoko. Lennon bashing aside (luckily he was such an amazing song writer), it will be interesting to see whether people will prefer hearing how it was meant to sound or nostalgically hold onto their love of the rawer original recording.

Being yet another one of those of kids that grew up on the multi-genre, genius that is The Beatles, i'm pretty stoked to hear what it's going to sound like. Although I don't know if my crappy lap top memory can deal with more Beatles albums. At last count I had about 21 Beatles albums, including box sets and any other kind of re-release variation you could think of. Add that to the five vinyls sitting in my room and the small shrine on my wall and you might say I have post-Beatle-mania, or maybe i'm just living in the past.

Also coming out today is The Beatles: Rockband. Which allows the gamer to play any Beatle and go through their back catalogue. This may even inspire your parents to pick up the guitar controller. Apparently it's basically the same game play as all the rest of the franchise but how could you resist with songs ranging from 'I Am The Walrus' to 'I Saw Her Standing There'.

Now all I need is a time machine so I can see them live and pronounce my love for George Harrison. What a dreamboat.

Pussy Whipped

Another teaser from another imminent release, this one personally excites me very much

The band is Rammstein and Pussy is the name of the first single from the upcoming and as-yet-untitled 6th studio album. I love Rammstein, alot. They're not Nazis. They're German. Get that into your thick skull. Anyway they're amazing and if you've seen them live you'd know why. Industrial chunk at its absolute finest and a stage show that is simply unforgettable. Excessive pyrotechnics, flame throwers, fire suits, simulated sodomy and cooking someone, its just.. fucking brilliant. Their video clips are nearly always brilliantly directed and interesting and I have little doubt that this one will be the same.

The album is not due out until next month and at the moment everythings being played very close to the chest. The clip for Pussy, however, will hopefully be up and about before the end of the month. I cant wait.

If You're Phenomenal And You Know It Clap Your Hands

If you have ever found yourself trapped under the insatiable spells of disco funking, rock - as I inadvertantly found myself when I discovered the likes of !!! at the Playground Weekender festival in 2007 - then you might find The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band rather interesting...

If you don't think you've heard of them, they may be better known playing the song on that ad where women in underwears ride around on roller skates. I don't want to be advertising brands here or anything, but it's quite a memorable ad. I taped it now though, so I don't have to sit through hours of mind-numbing TV waiting for it to come on.

Anyway, I have a tendency to thoroughly enjoy this musical style, and this Hand Clapping Band certainly do turn my enjoyment levels up phenomenally!

I was only ever aware of this band through the hidden veil of beautiful semi-naked women, but have quickly discovered their exploits into the worlds of electro and 60's soul.

Their new album came out in August and contains contributions from TV On The Radio, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and The Dap Kings. I know what I'm getting tomorrow. It may finally take me only 5 minutes to pick a CD at JB tomorrow.(Ha! that rhymes)

Check out their mp3, You'll Disappear. I highly recommend them.

You'll Disappear mp3

And just because it's on the net, here's that ad that everyone keeps going on about. Or I do anyway.

Swimming In A Pool of Clay

Les Claypool is a man with quite a history. The frontman of seminal 90's 3-piece Primus Les brought a whole new way of playing bass to the mainstream. Mix that with an insanely kooky edge and some very talented musicianship and its a key for success. Now Primus are nothing more than a band he occasionally gets together to play festivals, and he spends his time in side projects and solo projects - Les Claypools Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains, Oysterhead and so much more. He's done the theme songs for South Park and Robot Chicken to name a few.

Anyway the main reason I'm writing about him is I've been lucky enough to get my hands on his latest release 'Of Fungi And Foe' - and its pretty out there - but at the same time those who are familiar learn to expect nothing less of Mr. Claypool. I'll leave you with the clip for the single 'Red State Girl' - a nice little post-election dig at Sarah Palin with a very danceable groove.

The album, unfortunately, doesnt seem to be for sale here in Australia so might I recommend either ordering it or grabbing it here on Amazon

Its one of the most original releases of the year, its just a pity the guy seems hell bent on not coming to Australia anytime soon. Have a good weekend!

You tease!

Supergroup 'Them Crooked Vultures' released this teaser video of their song Scumbag Blues. The Crooked Vultures of course consists of John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age & Eagles Of Death Metal) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters & Nirvana).

Although i've heard much talk about this group i've never actually heard anything musically speaking until now. From what I can tell it sounds pretty solid. Josh Homme could knee cap me and i'd probably think the sound of my shattering bones were genius though. Love the animations in the clip, who knew Vultures were such bad asses, standing around with puppies and flashing people.

Thoughts?

A bunch of info is on their website here: Them Crooked Vultures.

I see london, I see france...

I have to put off my trip to England because of my horrid lack of money. Even my car is sitting out the front of my house in desperate need of some petrol as it will not co-operate with me and let me 'Flinstone' it. Although causing me to be totally bummed out, I am on the flip side deliriously happy because I am now back home in Melbourne. See you later Sydney you cruel mistress. I'll miss you Kings Cross drunkeness.

Although none of these songs are anything new I thought i'd give you a few of my fav little England-esque pick me up songs. Sure it's just a bunch of videos but that hour and a half in a plane left me jet lagged and i'm pretty sure I have a killer case of DVT.

Good Shoes - All In My Head
This one has one of my all time favourite lines, "I play in a band but i've got not talent", that should be many a bands tag lines. Hmmm who can I pick on? Galvatrons i'm looking at you.

Art Brut - Emily Kane
A London guy once wrote me a song like this. Soppily romantic yes, but I still like listening to this song with the slightly talk-sing vocals. Pick up your game Australian men.

The Fratellis - Creepin Up The Backstairs
Eeee! Great energy and riff. I don't know why this wasn't more popular. I find it far superior to Chelsea Dagger but ah well, that's the way it usually goes. Hearing this song usually results in me doing one of those Night At The Roxbury dances.

Bloc Party - One More Chance
As soon as I heard this I proceeded to play it over and over again. My housemate Dani was probably sick to death of it but then again she did make me listen to Arctic Monkeys Humbug 8 times in a row one night. Yes 8 times. Luckily I love the Arctic Monkeys and have no underlying resentment towards Alex Turner. Oh yeah, Bloc Party, love the almost 80's new wave throwback and the keyboard intro. Killer.

Out.

Guns Don't Kill People... Daggering does

There is no restrained way I can sugar coat it, I am absolutely madly in love with the work of Kid Sister. I know you must be suspect taking advice on rap or hip hop from a white boy, but don't hate.

Ok so I wouldn't say that my opinion regarding rap, hip hop or anything cool are all that refined but my love affair kicked off with old school throwback 'Family Reunion' which definitely proved she had the chops to match it. It had the right feel good vibe and oodles of potential.

On my second encounter with Kid Sister was 'Right Hand High' ventures into new territory and delivers something that is definitely radio friendly. It would sit nicely between the type of songs we are bombarded with from Ciara or say Timbaland (if he didn't go stale) where the lines between dance, pop, rap and rnb are so blurred you don't know what to think.

Check it out, Kid Sister... total babe.

Mp3: Kid Sister - Right Hand High

Myspace Vid: Major Lazer - Pon De Floor feat. Afro Jack & VYBZ Cartel

If you consider yourself even a moderate reader of blogs, you'd of heard about Diplo & Switch's creation Major Lazer some time ago. The album 'Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do' is bringing dancehall themes among many others to the people, well let's face it, to us ignorant white people.

Everyone I have shown the clip to 'Pon De Floor' to has been mortified by the simulated dry hump dancing known as daggering which features throughout the clip and has been banned in Jamaica due to too many injuries. After you watch the clip, I'm sure you'll be stunned that such a dance style originated in the Carribean.

Diplo & Switch are bringing their project to Aussie shores... Thus far only shows in WA & Victoria are planned, so it's not worth mentioning.

**Oww keep your eyes peeled too, Whiteboydancefloor are going to be jumping on the twitter train very soon with exclusive content we won't post anywhere else.

Not Your Saviour

The musical lifespan of a band is not until the idea of dog years. A year in the life of your average joe is seven in band years. So as far as band years go, Papa vs Pretty is older than the majority of musical band hopping whores who bandy the term 'side project' around frivolously. Thank god there are not musically transmitted diseases.

Papa vs Pretty in collaboration with friend and filmmaker Ben Wilson have gone about making an 8 part series called "From the Bunker" which showcases Papa vs Pretty in the recording process. The whole concept is simple and very digestible as it lends itself to the youtube (or in this case vimeo) world we live in.

Quite frankly I'm sick to death of hearing how old these guys are, or more so how young these guys are, its fucking irrelevant. What I am not sick of hearing is how good Papa vs Pretty is. But in classic Sydney style, we cling to anything awesome that we can call our own just so Melbourne doesn't have all the interesting things like Tiger Woods.

What impresses me about Papa vs Pretty is that rather than succumbing to the vice-grip pressure that Sydney siders place upon them, they instead march on with their musical endeavours continuing to experiment with bending genres with Jungle Train. Sydney might want the next uber-hip indie pop hit to shove in Melbournian faces and get the Bang Gang to remix it, but Papa vs Pretty couldn't give a shit. I love living in Sydney but the stupidity of our licensing laws is ridiculous, the track Club 77 where the band was denied the chance to play a set at a venue of the same name because they were under age.

However intentional or unintentional it may be, in the form of the raw soaring bliss that is 'Piper' , Papa vs Pretty deliver on a major scale.

PIPER from Papa Vs Pretty on Vimeo.

I think Kevin Rudd seems happy to throw out money for futile endeavours like his wife's stylist, I can see no reason why emerging genius like this shouldn't be given unlimited Commonwealth resources instead.
