Stream the new Morrissey album 'Ringleader of the Tormentors'

Here we have it, the new Morrissey Album for you to listen to. This guy is like the indie version of Burt Baccarach, releasing album after album of quality music. Morrisey's trademark semi-ironic doom and gloom are here again which make this modern-day crooner so appealing. Sure The Smiths are better, way better in fact, but Moz in solo form still belts out a competent tune.

Band Of Horses Offical Website

Band Of Horses MySpace page

The latest band to emerge from Sub Pop's ludicrously quality stable of artists, Seattle's Band Of Horses are leaving their mark, already receiveing great praise from critics, fellow bloggers and punters after the release of their debut effort 'Everything All The Time'. My Morning Jacket are a good sonic comparison, and they do the whole indie/southern-fried/folk rock thing just as good, if not better than their contemporaries.

Let me digress for a moment

Image hosting by Photobucket

I know this is a music-oriented blog, but i felt compelled to talk about another entertainment medium today and one show in particular that has caught my attention recently.

Love My Way is a drama series set in inner Sydney, centred around a group of young, urbane Australians. They have real jobs, real problems and real stories. This show portrays the real Australia, the Australia that has a 50% divorce rate, sruggles to cope with the commitments of family, friends and career, and shows the compelxity of 21st century relationships. It shows the real Sydney, away from the harbour and its beaches, and delves into its heart; a dense, intricate and vibrant metroplois crawling with people nursing stories of discontent and heartache.

Its is refreshing to see an Australian drama that doesn't focus on the boring outback, or the cliched beach scene, or on unreal stories and people. It is extremely well written and brilliantly acted ,a cast headed by the underrated Claudia Karvan and a slew of fresh, talented faces. This program is only available on Pay-TV, and that is a travesty. This show is important.

Your Blood Shall Spill...Tonight!

Ok Ok, So here at whiteboydancefloor we often make some fairly overstated remarks. And while I cannot actually guarantee that your blood will spill tonight, there is a remarkably high probability that it will happen should you encounter these young western sydney lads whilst walking to your favourite diner to endulge in a chocolate malt.

Burning these Bridges consists of five lads formerely from the pedigree of such Penrith prominents as Thoughts of Yesterday. The music is ferocious and relentless in delivery, not necessarily relying on mere repetitive blast beats or sonata artica 45 minute speed solo's to do so. The music is a brew of shredding guitars with impinging solos that vomit out of purgatory roaring over blood curdlying vocals. Unlike many of their genre's counterparts Burning these Bridges need not waste any Arteyu-time in reminiscent pop punking melody so as to take a rest from the strains on the vocal chords. Sorry yanks, but Burning these Bridges is western sydney hardcore you motherfucker... it doesnt concern itself with taking a breath!

While not currently gigging, the fella's have stated they will be gigging mid 2006 with an ep release hopefully somewhere around that time aswell. But for now you'll just have to take my word for it, their music will transfer to a blood spilling live affair.

While one could put this on at their next ultra-rad shindig and be mistaken for assuming these guys are the next big signing for Victory Records, the music proves that you dont need to be american, know an american or have the best make up artist to fuckin blow some balls off.

Dont believe me... well then your gay

Or, just see it with your own ears

SXSW Envy

Image hosting by Photobucket
I really wish i was in Austin, Tx right now, as the 20th South By South West Music Confrence is in town. So many amazing alt/indie bands, 1600 in fact over one insane weekend of gigs, trade shows and private parties hosted by indie music's literati. This year we have an amazing contingent of Australian bands flying the flag over there, such as WBDF faves The Presets(Girl and the Sea will feature on the OC next month :o), The Living End, Wolfmother and Decoder Ring. Here are some of the fresher Aussie acts making a noise at SXSW.

Clue To Kalo

These guys from Adelaide make dreamy Nu-Folk electronicised and are sure to make an impact in Austin. Clue To Kalo sonically posses what is needed to crack into the tough US market.

Dappled Cities Fly

2005 saw Dappled Cities Fly stand up and be counted in the Australian musical landscape, and after hearing their stunning brand of indie rock that shimmers and shines its not hard to see why. Watch out for them, this band are world class.

The Flairz

Ok this is weird, this band hailing from Fremantle have an average age of 12. Yeah sure they sound like deriviative of every other Australian rock guitar band and there is nothing new here, but they are 12 so its pretty impressive that they are playing SXSW at all!

Sia

Sia is a young lady making waves here in Australia and overseas. Her angelic voice coupled with serene and subtle instumentation make for a welcome change from the Missy Higgins' and Claire Bowdich's doing the rounds.

Chopper is back! And he's doin stuff!

Sorry about the lack of freshly squeezed content, university and availability of a computer has been hampering posts so here we are for another day..

Mark 'Chopper' Read's MySpace Profile
Video for 'Chop Chop' By Chopper Read

He's done it again, can you believe it? Children's books, a biopic and now a music career for the infamous Chopper Read! Yeah sure he's a criminal, sure he was declared insane many years ago but you can't dispute his business smarts for creating his own brand and his mythical persona since his emancipation. In an interview with 2UE Sydney presenter Stan Zemanek recently he said he now has the paper to prove his sanity, confessed that he hasn't got a musical bone in his body and dissed 50 Cent, calling rappers of his ilk 'fake gangsters'. Well he has stuck it to them with his new Rap release titled 'Interview With A Madman', which documents some of Chopper's experiences both from behind the bars and in front with his usual straight-talking nature intoned with his gravel-like voice. The music is honest, has a surprising amount of pathos despite its rugged exterior and thematic concerns. It's definetly worth a listen just for a peek into the soul of Australia's most notorious ex-cons. It make Fiddy look like Delta Goodrem (who was miming at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony last night btw).

Van She - Kelly Video

Yesterday i got my hands on Van She's self titled E.P., and it makes me feel like im in the mid 80's without the daggyness that usually follows. It surprised me, there are no real dancefloor fillers on the album, just some really great new wave tunes that you can groove to in a sort of swaying and headnodding sort of fashion. Despite its undeniable 80's feel with drum reverb, bold bass lines and synthesisers galore, this band still sound fresh and now. Check out the rad vintage Moog that features in the clip for 'Kelly', in my opinion the best track on the E.P.

At midnight the night is only young

Image hosting by Photobucket
Midnight Juggernauts MySpace profile

It seems at the moment we here in the land of Oz are blessed with a smorgasboard of really bitchin' electronic music. Melbourne's Midnight Juggernauts are also quite bitchin' indeed. I saw them play at Home a few weeks back with the Axwell and the Ministry Of Sound tour and they lifted the lid off the place, with their live instrumental aesthetic making a welcome change from the vinyl and decks. They arent lacking in the energy department, and deliver and exciting brand of rock-infused electro. In case you havent noticed, im on this rock-infused electro kick right now so until it dies down ill be dishing it out.

Music scares me sometimes

Image hosting by Photobucket

- It seems the North Korean Music Industry is in some form of renaissance, after news.com.au posted this article which claims that that nations dictator Kim Jong-Il is getting ' jiggy' with it, by endorsing many new songs for release in the country to boost the nations shattered morale. Some of these tracks carry the dubious monikers of 'Girl Silk-weavers of Nyongbyon', 'I Am a Front-line Soldier's Wife' and 'A Girl Innovator Dashing Like a Steed'. Ok i'm not sure if that is just a poor 'Engrish' translation or just a poor command of language full stop. Im keen to hear them but i doubt that they will be audible beyond the Communist nations razor-wired borders.
If you want to explore Korean music further, here is Allmusic's Korean portal.

- The Arctic Monkeys film will be released to DVD (go figure) in the UK next month. It will compose of two short films based on some of their rambling pieces of music. It will sell millions and will most likely blow. Im sorry guys, I really detest this band.

- U2 have postponed their Australian tour, apparantly a family member of a member of the band is ill or something and they can't tour. I hope they forget to come back, I dont want them in my city.

- YouTube is fun, there are heaps of random music videos there you can stream and stick on your MySpace page or Blog. I found this, its Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins! Mr Crotch-stuffing himself with a chunky slab of cheesy 80's rock from Mr Couch-Jumper's most recognised film, Top Gun. Why wasnt I around in the 80's dammit? Well i was, for 3 years but i couldn't remember it. This is rad to the max.

New TV On The Radio

Image hosting by Photobucket

TV On The Radio - I Was a Lover.mp3

They were the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! and the Arctic Monkeys of 2004, emerging from total obscurity the band TV On The radio garnered much attention upon the release of their debut EP and their subsequent full-length 'Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes' from press and punters alike. After listening to this NYC collective its not hard to justify the hype. Their sound is bold and unlike anything preceding it. Syncopated drum loops, afro-timbred vocal harmonies and a sort of comforting dissonance define the near undefinable TV On The Radio sound. Their new album is on the way, and this track is from it. Enjoy.

I like your sleeves

Alphaville - Forever Young.mp3

By now, everybody has heard Youth Group's competent interpretation of 'Forever Young' by Alphaville originally an obscure 80's track musing about the threat of nuclear annihilation arriving all too soon. Much of the original versions charm and irony is lost in the 2005 track, as it takes its self far too seriously and its from the O.C. so anything more than superficial has been lost on the listening public . Anyone who has seen the cult film Napoleon Dynamite would be familiar with the original. Its haunting and beautiful in equal measures, with murky synth strings, dorky drum reverb and that artificial trumpet solo creating an uncertain bliss that wades through the pile of rapture-themed music that has preceded it and followed it and comes out on top.

More Aussie pelvis-thrusting music

I told you i was on a quest, and i am a man of my word so ive found some more kick ass Australian music. Today ill give you two bands for your aural delight.

Image hosting by Photobucket

Teenager are a Sydney via Melbourne duo responsible for an engaging meal of electro-laced punk with an experimental garnish. The band have traversed the globe honing their craft over the past 3 yars and in the process have worked with the big guns from Sonic Youth, Electric Six and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The end product is extremely impressive and unique and my vocabulary cannot do the band justice. Just give them a listen.

Teenager - Myspace Profile

Image hosting by Photobucket

This band is a little more well known, scoring some supports with the big guns of Australian electro as well as a rubber-turning spot on the MOS #2 show just recently. I am talking about Van She, purveyors or rocking new wave revivalist sounds which places one foot firmly in 1984 while leaving the other in 2006. Krautrock, french house and 80's post punk and funk are their noted influences and they show through in this beautiful stew of retro and nouveau. These guys are going places.

It's time we danced to some good Aussie music...

Amen says Chris. If you were an outsider looking in at Australian music at the moment you would be forgiven for thinking the scene is full of insipid guitar-pop-lite acts, ac/dc time warp bands and lukewarm singer-songwriters. Alas, this is not the truth, and its my new mission to uncover the best in Australian music, and i will start my long quest with The Valentinos.

With an impressive roll of influences, from Can, !!!, The Pixies and Mission Of Burma, Sydney-based outfit The Valentinos have taken slight cues from their musical forefathers and have mixed new wave, electro, psycadelica and punk, forging viscious and debauched textures and grooves. They are guaranteed to get you and the Tsubi-wearing hipsters dancing and tripping out all at the same time. If you dig the Presets, you just might like this. If you want to check them out, they will be playing at VAMP this sunday at the Waverly Bowling Club with Van She and a slew of guests.
